Bio:
Zach Herbert is a Boise-based musician and interdisciplinary performance artist working under the moniker St. Terrible. A multi-instrumentalist and live looper, his music ranges from experimental folk to ambient minimalism, his vocals from guttural to ethereal, crafting performances that are intimate, surreal, and emotionally charged. Moving fluidly between musical projects, experimental film, and immersive performances, drawing unlikely influence from therapeutic modalities and contemplative practices. his practice resists easy categorization. His work explores tensions within the human experience in pursuit of presence, aliveness, and connection. Each project presents a uniquely intricate world that is emotionally rich, existentially charged, and deeply heartfelt.

What feels exceptional about this moment:
For nearly two years, I have been developing a new musical practice through pop-up performances, experimental sound clinics, and intimate listening rooms in Idaho, Los Angeles, and New York City. This process has resulted in a body of work that feels both ambitious and fully realized. Throughout this period, audiences consistently expressed a desire to engage with the work beyond the live setting, while industry professionals noted that having this work in a shareable form could lead to opportunities for touring, residencies, and collaborations. The developmental phase has finished, and the next essential step is recording. Funding would support the project at the exact moment it is ready to become tangible, widely shareable, and far-reaching. At the same time, recent trips to New York City revealed strong enthusiasm for my work from both audiences and industry professionals. After only a handful of performances, I was invited to perform at 57 NYC’s FAM event with Ryan Leslie, interviewed on the HiddenTracks music podcast, and approached about future work within the city. I want to build on this momentum while also representing Boise within the East Coast experimental music scene, creating a meaningful connection between Idaho and New York.
Summary of proposed project and why it is well positioned to succeed:
Rituals for Coming Apart is an immersive album and three-part New York City performance cycle exploring states of dissolution: the moments when identity, certainty, or meaning breaks down, and the forms of presence that can emerge on the other side. The work integrates experimental looping, minimalist and electronic music, extended vocal and horn techniques, with influence from practices of meditation and ritual. I will complete the recording of the album through a combination of studio sessions and live-performance recordings, preserving the audience-responsive process that shaped the work. The album will then be mixed, mastered, released, and debuted through three intimate NYC performances, each designed as a distinct ritual stage of the project.
The work is well positioned for regional and national reach because it has already been tested with audiences around the United States, having found strong alignment and interest from communities in places like NYC. A completed recording, release campaign, and a subsequent performance cycle in NYC would allow the project to have a life far beyond Idaho, expand my professional visibility, and open pathways to future performance opportunities, residencies, and collaborations. It also builds a bridge between Boise’s experimental music community and national performance contexts.
How and where the project may be shared, who may help bring it forward, and what audiences it may reach:
This project aims to reach both new and past audiences: audiences in the experimental music scene in NYC and the wider northeast region, and audiences who have experienced this work live in the past 2 years. The album will be shared initially to audiences who come to the special live performances but once it’s finished its debut cycle, it will be made available for listening and for physical purchase online.
The performance cycle will be performed in 3 intimate venues in NYC. Noah Koski will run booking securing booking for the NYC performances, as well as helping with event production. Noah has relationships with venues aligned with the approach of this project, including The Juice Box, Reforesters, Public Records and Pioneer Works, all of which support experimental music and provide intentional performance spaces with some level of built-in audiences. Ross DeMastus, a Boise based audio engineer and recording studio owner, will be recording and co-producing the album. Ross helped record and co-produce my last full-length project. He is intimately familiar with both my live work and my approach to studio recording. We will work together to create an album that can hold its own in the national experimental music scene.
Current stage of project, and key milestones:
The project has finished its live developmental phase and is currently beginning to enter its recording and release phase. The material and creative approach is now ready to become a completed album and public performance cycle.
•Late summer to early fall 2026: Begin recording the album in Idaho with Ross DeMastus, combining studio sessions with selected live-performance recordings.
•Winter 2026 to early 2027: Refine the three-part live performance cycle for the NYC debut, adapting each show to the intimacy, sound, and audience relationship of the selected spaces. Create release materials, performance documentation, press assets, and promotional strategy for the album and NYC performances.
•Late winter 2027: Finish recording with a final mix and master of the album by March 2027.
•Spring 2027: Present a Boise soft launch, sharing the project locally first, with performance documentation.
•Early Summer 2027: Debut the project in New York City through a series of three special performances over the course of a 3 week period in June/July of 2027.
